Claude free limit reset: how “Reset for free” works

Claude’s free limit reset is an occasional account grant that immediately restores either a 5-hour session limit or weekly limit back to full without waiting for the normal reset time. When available, a “Reset for free” button appears in Settings › Usage and on the limit-reached notification banner in Claude on the web or Desktop.

This saveable reset is not your normal scheduled reset, and it is not Claude Code’s /limit-reset command. You can bank it until its posted expiration date, but once activated, it cannot be undone.

The three resets compared

Claude now has three different concepts that users call a “reset.” Understanding which one you have determines what will happen when you use it:

What changes vs. what does not change

Activating a free limit reset is an immediate, one-way action. Here is what changes on your account and what remains exactly the same:

✓

What changes when activated

  • Target allowance returns to full: The specific limit named in the offer (session or weekly) is restored immediately.
  • Active lockout clears instantly: If your chat or coding session was halted by a limit banner, you can immediately submit new prompts.
  • Account-wide synchronization: Because subscription quotas are shared, the replenished allowance is immediately accessible on Claude Web, Claude Desktop, Claude Mobile, and Claude Code.
  • Grant is consumed: The reset offer is redeemed and removed from your Settings › Usage dashboard.
✕

What does NOT change

  • Normal weekly reset schedule does not move: If your account resets every Wednesday at 2:00 PM UTC, your next weekly reset will still occur on Wednesday at 2:00 PM UTC.
  • No credit refunds: Previously billed pay-as-you-go extra usage or consumed Usage Credits are not refunded or credited back.
  • Other limits remain unaffected: A 5-hour session reset does not reset your weekly limit. A weekly reset does not alter active rate limits on third-party API keys.
  • Cannot be undone: You cannot pause the reset once activated or convert it back into an unused banked grant.

5-hour vs. weekly: what does your offer actually reset?

One of the most frequent points of confusion is whether clicking “Reset for free” restores both your session allowance and your weekly allowance. It does not automatically reset both.

If your grant is a 5-hour session reset:

The reset clears your immediate 5-hour interactive session ceiling. If you were blocked with a banner reading 5-hour limit reached - resets [time], this clears the block immediately.

Watch out: Your weekly limit continues counting. If your weekly meter is already at 95%, unblocking your 5-hour session allows you to send prompts, but you may quickly hit the weekly ceiling. Check your weekly meter in Settings › Usage before activating.

If your grant is a weekly limit reset:

The reset wipes your cumulative 7-day usage meter back to zero. This is the more valuable grant, as weekly lockouts otherwise require waiting days for your account’s assigned weekly reset timestamp.

Using a weekly reset does not advance or reschedule your normal weekly cycle. If your week normally renews on Fridays, it will still renew on Friday.

Opus 5.5 and the “saved reset”

The surge in searches for “opus 5.5 reset” and “claude banked reset” coincided with Anthropic’s release of Claude Opus 5.5. In the launch announcement, Anthropic said it was increasing five-hour usage limits on Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans and providing subscription users a rate-limit reset that could be saved for later.

Anthropic’s current plan documentation describes the standard weekly limit as applying across all models, alongside the five-hour session limit. Anthropic may apply additional model- or feature-specific limits at its discretion, so Settings › Usage is the source of truth for any extra meter shown on your account.

Key takeaway for Opus 5.5 users: If a reset appears in Settings › Usage, the offer itself tells you whether it restores the five-hour session limit or the weekly limit. If the all-model weekly limit is exhausted, switching to Sonnet or Haiku does not bypass it. Usage Credits may provide a continuation path when enabled. For full details on model-specific usage and reasoning effort, see our Opus 5.5 usage limits guide.

How to find and activate a free limit reset

To claim or verify whether your account has an active free reset, follow these steps:

1

Open Settings › Usage in Claude Web or Desktop

Click your profile avatar or initials in Claude (web browser or desktop app) and select Settings. Click the Usage tab.

Note: The reset control does not currently appear inside Claude Mobile apps or Claude Code terminals. You must open a browser or desktop client to activate it.
2

Check the “Resets” section

Look below your usage progress bars for the Resets section. If an offer is available, you will see a card showing what the reset restores (session or weekly limit) and any posted expiration date.

If your account is already rate-limited, the same “Reset for free” button will also appear directly on the in-chat lockout notification.

3

Click “Reset for free” and confirm

Click the Reset for free button. A confirmation dialog will prompt you to confirm the redemption. Click confirm to apply the reset.

Once confirmed, the limit named in the offer returns to full immediately. The restored account allowance is then available across web, desktop, mobile, and Claude Code.

What to do if you do not have a free reset

If you check Settings › Usage and no “Reset for free” button appears, your account does not currently have an active grant. Here are your options to keep working:

1. Check your scheduled reset timer

If you hit the 5-hour limit, your allowance automatically refreshes when the 5-hour window ends. If you hit your weekly limit, access restores at your account’s fixed weekly day and time. Both timestamps are displayed in Settings › Usage and in the chat banner.

2. Enable pay-as-you-go Usage Credits

Pro and Max users can enable Usage Credits in Settings › Usage. Team and seat-based Enterprise organizations can also enable usage credits through organization settings. When available and enabled, usage beyond the included limit is billed at standard API rates.

Learn about token pricing and spend caps in our Usage Credits guide.

3. Claude Code users: check for the /limit-reset command

If you are working in the terminal CLI, run /usage and test whether /limit-reset is available for your session. If a server grant is provisioned for your CLI session, it can unblock your terminal session limit.

4. Review recovery options

If you are currently blocked and deciding between waiting, switching models, or upgrading tiers, walk through our step-by-step limit reached checklist.

Frequently asked questions about free limit resets

What is Claude's free limit reset?

A free limit reset is an occasional account grant from Anthropic that lets eligible users immediately restore an active usage limit back to full capacity without waiting for the scheduled timer. When available, it appears as a 'Reset for free' button in Settings › Usage and on the limit-reached notification banner in Claude on the web or Claude Desktop.

Who is eligible to receive a free limit reset?

Anthropic says limit resets are given occasionally to eligible plans. It has not published an exhaustive eligibility list or a fixed schedule for when accounts receive them. The Opus 5.5 launch announcement said subscription users would receive a rate-limit reset, but the Help Center still tells users to rely on the offer shown in Settings › Usage.

Can I save or bank the reset for later?

Yes. You do not have to activate a limit reset the moment it appears. You can bank it and keep working normally until you hit an intensive workload or an active limit block. If your grant carries an expiration date, it is displayed next to the offer in Settings › Usage.

Does the free limit reset expire?

Unused resets may include an expiration date and time, which is displayed in Settings › Usage. If not redeemed before that timestamp, the grant lapses. In addition, if you cancel or downgrade your Claude subscription before redeeming the reset, the grant is forfeited.

What does the reset actually restore: 5-hour, weekly, or both?

It restores either your 5-hour session limit or your weekly usage limit, depending on the specific offer provisioned for your account. It does not automatically reset both. Check the offer description in Settings › Usage to confirm whether your grant targets your session limit or your weekly allowance.

Does using a weekly limit reset change my regular weekly reset schedule?

No. Using a weekly limit reset restores that weekly usage limit to full, but your account's usual weekly reset day and time remain unchanged. For example, if your weekly limit normally resets every Thursday at 3:00 PM, it will still reset on that schedule.

Can I trigger the free limit reset from Claude Code or Claude Mobile?

No. The 'Reset for free' button is currently only accessible via Claude on the web (claude.ai) or the Claude Desktop application. It is not surfaced directly inside the Claude mobile app or in terminal CLI sessions. However, because subscription allowances are shared account-wide, once you activate the reset on web or desktop, your restored capacity applies immediately to Claude Code and Claude Mobile.

Is this the same as Claude Code's /limit-reset command?

No. The saveable 'Reset for free' button is an account grant managed through Claude's web and desktop Settings. Claude Code's /limit-reset is a separate, undocumented terminal command observed to reset an eligible 5-hour session limit while leaving the weekly limit in place. They are separate mechanisms with distinct interfaces.

Does a free limit reset refund Usage Credits already spent?

No. Activating a limit reset only restores your included subscription allowance going forward. It does not refund previously billed extra usage, reverse completed charges, or alter your remaining Usage Credit balance.

Can I undo a limit reset after activating it?

No. Once you click 'Reset for free' and confirm, the action is permanent and cannot be undone, paused, or transferred back into a saved state.

Can I reset my limit for free on the Claude Free tier?

Anthropic's limit-reset documentation does not explicitly list Free-plan eligibility. Free accounts normally have a session-based usage limit that resets every five hours. If Settings › Usage does not show a 'Reset for free' offer on your account, the documented path is to wait for the normal reset or move to a plan with more usage.
