Claude Cloud Session Credits: Rules, Claim Deadline, and Limits

Claude Cloud Session Credits are a temporary promotional balance for eligible existing subscribers: $100 for Pro and $250 for Max. The credit pays for qualifying Claude Code cloud sessions before normal plan usage is touched. Eligible users must claim the credit by October 7, 2026; claimed balances expire November 4, 2026, after which cloud sessions draw from your plan's standard usage limits.

Answer in short:
  • Promotional amounts: $100 for eligible existing Pro subscribers; $250 for eligible existing Max subscribers.
  • Order of consumption: Anthropic documents that qualifying cloud sessions consume promotional credit before normal plan usage, leaving regular five-hour and weekly limits untouched while credits remain.
  • Claim deadline: October 7, 2026 (the in-product claim screen specifies 11:59 PM PT) via claude.ai/code/claim-credit or /claim-credit in the CLI.
  • Balance expiration: November 4, 2026 (the in-product offer terms specify 11:59 PM PT). Any remaining promotional balance disappears.
  • When credits run out: Cloud sessions automatically revert to regular plan usage. There is no surprise compute charge or separate VM fee.
  • Not ordinary Usage Credits: This is a free promotional pool for cloud sessions, not user-funded pay-as-you-go Usage Credits.
Time-sensitive deadlines: claim vs. expiration
Deadline to claimOctober 7, 2026(In-product claim screen specifies 11:59 PM PT)

You must actively redeem the credit before this cutoff. Unclaimed offers are permanently forfeited.

Deadline to use (expiry)November 4, 2026(In-product offer terms specify 11:59 PM PT)

Once claimed, the balance can be spent on eligible cloud sessions until this date. Remaining balances do not roll over.

Distinguishing your usage mechanisms:

• To understand how standard subscription allowances refill, read our usage limits guide.

• For paid pay-as-you-go continuation billed at API token rates, see our Usage Credits guide.

• For general terminal commands, quota monitoring, and session mechanics, see our Claude Code usage guide.

What the in-product “cloud session credits applies automatically” message means

When launching a cloud session in Claude Code, searchers often encounter this notice:

“cloud session credits applies automatically to cloud sessions. after it’s used or expires, your plan’s regular usage applies.”

This message addresses two distinct concerns that confuse users:

1. “Applies automatically to cloud sessions”

You do not need to configure API keys, billing toggles, or payment settings before every run. If your account holds an active promotional Cloud Session Credit balance and you launch an eligible cloud session, Anthropic automatically charges that session against the promotional dollar pool rather than deducting from your five-hour session or weekly subscription limits.

2. “After it’s used or expires, your plan’s regular usage applies”

This confirms that cloud sessions are not turning into an unbundled, paid-only add-on. There is no separate infrastructure fee for the cloud virtual machine. Once your promotional balance reaches $0 or expires on November 4, 2026, cloud sessions seamlessly revert to drawing from your plan’s normal included message and token limits.

Cloud Session Credits vs. normal plan limits vs. Usage Credits

The naming similarities between “Cloud Session Credits” and “Usage Credits” create widespread confusion. They are completely separate mechanisms with different funding sources, eligible surfaces, and expiration rules.

What we measured during a live Cloud Session Credit run

On October 3, 2026, we ran an Anthropic-hosted Claude Code cloud session on an account with an active promotional Cloud Session Credit balance to observe how remote execution interacts with rate limits and quota tracking.

First-party test conditions (October 3, 2026)
Surface: Claude Code cloud session on claude.ai/code
Environment: Anthropic-hosted cloud environment
Client version: Claude Code 2.1.288
Model & effort: claude-opus-5-5 (high effort)
Observation window: ~22 minutes (44 model requests)
Summed usage tokens: 8,348,115 (97.0% cache reads)

The session ran without an API key, without claude -p, without the Agent SDK, and without subagents.

During this observation window, Claude Code's own cloud-session telemetry produced four rate-limit events. Across all four events, Claude Code reported rateLimitType: ccr_promotional as the active bucket, with both five-hour and seven-day utilization remaining at 0:

CheckpointActive bucket5-hour utilizationWeekly utilizationReported 5-hour reset
22:39 UTCccr_promotional0003:30 UTC
22:40 UTCccr_promotional0003:40 UTC
22:51 UTCccr_promotional0003:50 UTC
23:01 UTCccr_promotional0004:00 UTC

Reset timestamp behavior: The reported five-hour reset timestamp also moved forward with the clock at each checkpoint instead of remaining anchored during the observation. Each reported resetsAt value matched floor(event timestamp to 10 minutes) + 5 hours. Meanwhile, the seven-day reset timestamp remained static at 2026-10-09T18:00:00Z, and the promotional bucket expiration remained 2026-11-05T08:00:00Z (midnight Pacific immediately following November 4, 2026, matching the promotional cutoff).

Telemetry cost counter: Claude Code's get_session telemetry also reported a running cost_usd value of $3.958175 at approximately 23:01 UTC. Reconstructing the main-thread transcript's observed tokens priced against Anthropic's official Opus 5.5 API list rates ($4/million input, $20/million output, $0.20/million cache read, $5/million 5-minute cache write, and $8/million 1-hour cache write) produced approximately $3.872716. While close, this running estimate does not prove that $3.96 was deducted from the promotional credit balance; This test did not observe the promotional credit balance directly.

What this indicates

In our October 3 test while promotional Cloud Session Credits were active, Claude Code's own telemetry identified the active bucket as ccr_promotional. Across four rate-limit events during approximately 22 minutes of Opus 5.5 cloud work, the reported five-hour and seven-day utilization fields both remained at 0. This is consistent with promotional Cloud Session Credits being consumed before normal plan usage, which is how Anthropic describes the promotion.

Explicit test limitations

This was one cloud session on one credit-holding account. It does not establish behavior after the promotional balance is exhausted, after the promotion ends on November 4, on other subscription tiers, or on different accounts.

How to claim your Cloud Session Credits

Anthropic provides two official methods to claim the credit before the October 7, 2026 deadline:

Method 1

Claim via the web browser

  1. Log in to your Claude account at claude.ai.
  2. Navigate directly to the claim page at claude.ai/code/claim-credit.
  3. If your account is eligible, confirm the claim to deposit the $100 (Pro) or $250 (Max) balance.
  4. Ensure your GitHub account is linked to launch sessions at claude.ai/code.
Method 2

Claim via Claude Code CLI

  1. Open your terminal and launch an authenticated Claude Code session.
  2. Type /claim-credit and press Enter.
  3. Follow the prompt to redeem the promotional allocation for your linked Pro or Max subscription.

Important: If you do not claim the credits before October 7, 2026 (11:59 PM PT in the offer UI), the claim link and command will no longer apply the grant.

Which sessions consume the promotional credit (and what is excluded)

Cloud Session Credits do not apply to all Claude activity across your account. They are strictly scoped to Anthropic-hosted cloud execution environments for Claude Code.

Eligible (Consumes Promo Credit)
  • Anthropic-hosted cloud sessions: Claude Code sessions running in Anthropic's cloud infrastructure via claude --cloud.
  • Web-initiated sessions: Cloud sessions started through the browser interface at claude.ai/code.
  • Mobile/Desktop cloud tasks: Remote cloud tasks launched from official desktop or mobile apps against connected repositories.
Excluded (Uses Normal Limits or Credits)
  • Local Claude Code sessions: Running claude locally in your terminal consumes your standard plan limits.
  • Projects & Routines: Anthropic explicitly excludes Claude Projects and scheduled Routines from the promotion.
  • Regular web chat: Conversations on claude.ai consume your normal 5-hour and weekly limits.
  • Anthropic API Console: Work billed to API keys via console.anthropic.com is completely separate.

Why doesn't the /usage command display my cloud credit balance?

In Claude Code, /usage shows your plan's usage limits and current rate-limit status. The promotional Cloud Session Credit is a separate dollar-denominated balance, so it does not appear as part of those plan-usage bars.

To check the promotional balance, open Settings > Usage in Claude and look for the Cloud session credits section. That surface shows the remaining promotional balance and its expiration date.

What happens when your Cloud Session Credits reach zero or expire

Many users hesitate to use Claude Code cloud sessions because they fear incurring an unexpected cloud VM bill or getting locked out once the credit pool dries up. Here is what happens under Anthropic's documented policy:

1. No separate compute charges: Claude Code cloud sessions running on Anthropic-hosted infrastructure do not carry a separate compute charge for the virtual machine. You are not billed hourly VM fees when the promotional balance is gone.

2. Automatic fallback to regular plan usage: The moment your promotional credit balance hits $0 (or when November 4, 2026 arrives), your cloud sessions seamlessly switch to consuming your subscription's regular allowances—specifically, your five-hour session limit and your weekly account limit.

3. Standard limits apply if you run out: If your regular subscription limits become fully exhausted while running a cloud session, your session will pause just like any local session. You can either wait for your scheduled five-hour session or weekly reset (see our reset times guide) or enable optional paid Usage Credits at standard API rates to keep working.

Frequently asked questions about Cloud Session Credits

What are Claude Cloud Session Credits?

Claude Cloud Session Credits are a one-time promotional grant from Anthropic for qualifying Claude Code cloud sessions. Anthropic announced $100 for eligible existing Pro subscribers and $250 for eligible existing Max subscribers. The promotional balance is spent before normal plan usage, and any unspent claimed balance expires November 4, 2026.

How much promotional credit do Pro and Max subscribers receive?

Anthropic announced a one-time $100 promotional credit for eligible existing Pro subscribers and $250 for eligible existing Max subscribers. The promotion is for existing individual Pro and Max subscribers, not Free accounts or API-billed Claude Code usage.

When is the deadline to claim Claude Cloud Session Credits?

Anthropic announced the claim deadline as October 7, 2026, with the in-product claim screen specifying 11:59 PM PT. If you do not claim the offer before that cutoff, the grant is forfeited.

When do claimed Claude Cloud Session Credits expire?

Claimed balances expire on November 4, 2026 (the in-product offer terms specify 11:59 PM PT). Any remaining promotional dollar balance after that timestamp vanishes and does not roll over.

What does 'cloud session credits applies automatically to cloud sessions. after it’s used or expires, your plan’s regular usage applies' mean?

It means two things. First, under Anthropic's documented rules, eligible Anthropic-hosted cloud sessions burn through your promotional credit balance first, before normal five-hour session or weekly plan limits apply. Second, once the credit balance reaches $0 or expires on November 4, 2026, cloud sessions do not incur surprise compute charges or get blocked; they simply revert to drawing from your regular subscription allowance.

Does using Cloud Session Credits consume my normal 5-hour or weekly limits?

Under Anthropic's documented promotion terms, qualifying cloud sessions draw from your promotional credit balance before normal plan usage applies. In our October 3 telemetry test during an active promotional session, reported five-hour and weekly utilization fields both remained at 0 while the promotional bucket was active. Regular subscription limits apply once promotional credits are exhausted or expire.

How do I claim the promotional credit?

You can claim the credit in two ways: visit claude.ai/code/claim-credit in your browser while signed into an eligible Pro or Max account, or run /claim-credit directly in an authenticated Claude Code terminal session. You must have a connected GitHub account to launch cloud sessions.

Why doesn't the Claude Code /usage command show my Cloud Session Credit balance?

In Claude Code, /usage shows your plan's usage limits and current rate-limit status. The promotional Cloud Session Credit is a separate dollar-denominated balance, so it does not appear as part of those plan-usage bars. To check the promotional balance, open Settings > Usage in Claude and look for the Cloud session credits section. That surface shows the remaining promotional balance and its expiration date.

Are Cloud Session Credits the same as Claude Usage Credits?

No. Cloud Session Credits are a free, temporary promotional grant ($100 or $250) specifically for Claude Code cloud sessions that expires November 4, 2026. Ordinary Usage Credits are user-funded, pay-as-you-go credits billed at standard API token rates that let your account continue working after hitting plan limits across all surfaces.

What happens if my Cloud Session Credits reach zero during a task?

Your cloud session does not abruptly abort, and you will not receive an unexpected compute invoice. Instead, your account automatically transitions to using your regular subscription allowance (your five-hour session and weekly limits). If your plan limits are already exhausted at that moment, normal limit rules apply: work pauses until reset unless you have optional paid Usage Credits configured.

Do Cloud Session Credits apply to Projects, Routines, or local Claude Code?

No. Promotional Cloud Session Credits apply strictly to Anthropic-hosted Claude Code cloud sessions. Projects, Routines, local CLI sessions, and standard claude.ai web chats are excluded and consume normal subscription limits.
